U.S. Reassesses the Philippines’ Defense Industrial Value Despite Growing Risk of a Duterte Comeback
On March 18, 2026, the member states of the Partnership for Indo-Pacific Industrial Resilience (PIPIR) held their second plenary session to synchronize efforts on diversifying defense supply chains and advancing joint technological development.
The parties agreed to deploy advanced aviation engine maintenance hubs in Japan and South Korea and initiated joint U.S.–Japan production of solid rocket motors. In addition, they committed to developing a plan for the collective production of multi-purpose modular drones to meet regional security requirements.
A key strategic outcome of the meeting was the launch of a production line in the Philippines for 30×173 mm ammunition, covering loading, assembly, and packaging. This NATO-standard caliber underpins the firepower of modern infantry fighting vehicles, attack aviation, and counter–loitering munition systems.
